After a thoroughly enjoyable evening last night at Orange Coast College thrilling to the exploits of the CHOC Follies as it presented “The Princess and the Prius,” Executive Producer Gloria Zigner told a terrific story about Roger Hogan, owner of Capistrano Toyota, which donated a Prius for a raffle to benefit the children’s hospital.

Yacht or not

Four Mexican leaders came to our office today to talk about the annual Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race.

It wasn’t your average tourist promotion. It’s become more like damage control, unfortunately, as the Mexican government strives to smash drug cartels wreaking destruction as they war among themselves for the drug trade. One sad side effect to the rising violence is some folks are saying they’re afraid to join in the fun this year. The sailors generally say they’re unafraid, but their families aren’t as eager as usual to make the trip, especially if it means passing through Tijuana where there have been some reports of problems.

Soup’s on!

Just heard about this tonight and haven’t had a chance to report it out, but I’m hearing some of the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen neighbors are organizing to block the soup kitchen’s request to put up a 1,000-square-foot portable structure in the parking lot to offer tutoring. So I can’t give you a clear view of the exact details of the opposition or of the soup kitchen’s plans.
